Audio Video Upgrades

My audio setup at home consists of a Kenwood Receiver, 5 disc Kenwood CD changer, two Kenwood Floor speakers and a Norcent DVD Player. I paid right around 500 bucks for everything but the DVD Player about five years ago. They've lasted me since then.

My video setup consists of a regular CRT Akai TV 25".

So it's time to upgrade. The CRT needs to give way to either a Plasma or an LCD Flat Panel. The receiver can stay but I doubt if it's going to help in DTS decoding or 6.1 sound. The speakers are obviously inadequate. They're two large speakers that sit in the back left and back right areas of the viewer but that's not surround sound.

So here's the shopping list:

1) 37" to 42" TV - possibly LCD or Plasma. Here's a beautiful comparison between the two

2) Home theater speakers: JBL / Klipsch / Bose / Infinity

3) Sub woofer

4) Receiver: Maybe a Denon but largely undecided

5) Hardware: TV wall-mount, speaker wires

Needless to say the bank account is going to look severely depleted but then again, it's only money. That's what I work for -- to live life and life it out for me and Noddy.

Okay, so given all that, if you have any advice on any items above based on your purchases please do provide feedback that will help us decide one way or the other. I think we're really really on the fence about LCD v/s Plasma especially after reading the comparison shown above. Tell us what you own and what you recommend. We're all ears!!

Dunno how much of an audiophile you are, but if you are, consider making sure that your DVD/CD player can natively play SACDs, and either:

1. you can connect your DVD/CD player to the receiver using an optical cable or

2. that you can send out 5.1 signal from your player and more importantly, that the receiver can accept 5.1 to render "true" sound.

Once you've expererienced the quality of an SACD, it is difficult to turn away. IMHO, it is best to stay away from systems that digitally enhance or morph sound such as those with DSP, so I am not a huge fan of Bose systems. A receiver that can turn on/off THX would be a godsend to fill that beautiful living room with rich sound.

Can't help you much with the plasma/LCD yet - there is no magic formula - several comparison articles and points of opinion exist. eg http://reviews-zdnet.com.com/4520-8900_16-5120008-1.html

Good luck, and may your avaliable funds always exceed your wildest solution!

Go LCD instead of plasma

Get the Bose 3-2-1 system. I love it! Easy to setup as well.

I'm sorry that I cannot contribute more to the opinion process. My "music room" consists of a 25 dollar cd/cassette player from walmart that doesn't play cassettes. And I was a music major...

I have been following a site now for almost 2 years and I have found it to be both reliable and profitable. They post daily and their stock trades have been beating
the indexes easily.

Take a look at Wallstreetwinnersonline.com

I am happy for you! That some great stuff in there. My husband and I decided a couple of months ago to do " upgrading" as well, funny it didn't turn out the way we want. I got relieved from work. Now how can we afford to upgrade!
